Indie rock certainly has a few albums that people may consider our 'Sgt. Pepper's', and this is without a doubt one of them. Recorded by Brian Paulson (not Steve Albini as some may think) and released by four dudes from Kentucky, this 1991 album is essential. It is extremely heavy, emotional, technical and musical at the same time. Elements of math rock, emo and new metal spawned from this low profile Touch and Go release.

The production of the album is notable because of the simplistic use of just drums, bass, guitar and voice. There's no extra cheese, no keyboards and no studio tricks. The album only has six songs total but it is a true full-length epic.

The oddly creepy album cover was taken by fellow Kentucky citizen, Will Oldham. This type of mysterious imagery combined with spooky lyrics enhanced the overall feeling that this album was other-worldly. It is a true timeless release that sounds great today. If you have never heard this album as a whole, get it, turn down the lights and turn it up.
